06 | HIGHLY INAPPROPRIATE

AFTER A YEAR HAD PASSED since that ill-fated mission on the moon of Dyn, Helga ATE—now a captain—was all about the life of an army pilot. Leaving the past and the fear that came with it suppressed in her mind, she avoided contact with Cilas MEC as much as possible while putting her focus on her career. Cilas became a major and was kept off the ship for one mission after another, while Helga was held back with several other officers to manage the Rendron. With the rank of captain came leadership, and she was inside the barracks daily, answering a number of questions from pilots and approving directives that came across her desk. It was nothing exciting, but she knew that staying the good soldier that she was would eventually get her to the rank of colonel. Having that high of a rank would surely get the notice of her estranged twin brother, who stayed out of contact with her, seemingly out of spite.

Helga needed her brother now more than ever since she had no real friends aboard the Rendron. Things had gotten awkward between her and Cilas after the kiss, and the few times they saw each other, the only thing he ever wanted to talk about was finding out who had set them up.

There were other issues going on with Helga, which she kept to herself but suffered from nonetheless. She had been sent to the ship’s psychiatrist after the Dyn mission, but the drugs that were given to her were meant for humans and not Casanians. The Casanian brain was a lot more resilient and stubborn when it came to trauma, and she did not feel any better after taking them.

Helga had a hard time sleeping after Dyn, as she would wake up from what she could only describe as an unsettling silence, and would rely on various pills to help her sleep. The drug-induced sleep produced awful nightmares, and many of them featured the faces of Cage, Lamia Brafa, and the Geralos that bit the girl beside her. In the year that had passed, she had gotten extremely close to Commander Retzo SHO. She was his unofficial prodigy in the way of piloting, but to the soldiers who
